Healthy LivingEating well is an important part of healthy living. The two primary factors of healthy living are eating the right food and exercising.

A balanced diet should include fruits, vegetables, and starches such as wholemeal bread and whole grain cereals. Meat, fish, eggs, and lentils are rich sources of proteins. Milk and dairy products, too, need to be consumed in adequate amounts.

The following are 8 tips on eating right:

1. Include starchy foods
Foods rich in starch such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta, and potatoes are important for healthy living. Include whole grain foods.

2. Consume lots of fruits and vegetable
Include a minimum of five portions of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Having a glass of juice is also beneficial.

3. Eat fish
Fish is a rich source of protein, and has many vitamins and minerals. Fish oil is healthy.

4. Lower consumptions of refined fat and sugar
Fats are essential to the diet. The type of fat determines if it is good or bad. Saturated fat is bad for the heart.

5. Lower consumption of salt
Limit consumption of salt to less than 6 grams per day.

Asana means posture. However, the literal meaning is ‘seat’. Previously, asanas were the stable postures for long periods of meditation. They were more than merely stretching exercises. Asanas laid greater emphasis on the energy centers, chakras, and psychic centers of the body. With different yoga poses, the body is strengthened and the mind is able to focus. Of the eight limbs of classical yoga, asana is one.

Asanas should be comfortable as well as firm. During a yoga pose, it is important to breathe slowly and deeply. Dirga or Ujjiayi Pranayama can be used at this stage. Stretch your body to the maximum during these yoga poses. However, do not overstretch as this could lean to pain and injury.
